James: Chapter Seventeen

Every light in the house was off when he emerged from the bedroom and for a moment James panicked, thinking Maze had made good on his plan to leave. There was a brief moment in which his heart jumped into this throat and then a second later he heard the noises of the television and let out a breath he hadn’t realised he’d been holding.

Making his way quietly through the dining area he found Maze in the living room watching television. James crossed his arms and leaned against the door frame, taking a second to simply admire the alien in his living room. How had he not realised before that the ‘rules’ didn’t apply to Maze? He’d been so stupid and stubborn for so long.

After a moment he cleared his throat to announce his presence and grinned when Maze startled slightly and turned his head to face him looking surprised.

“Hey,” James said quietly.

“Hey yourself,” Maze smiled. There was that amazing ability to let things go and James couldn’t help but smile wider. The smile was apparently cause for concern to Maze, his own smile fell and he frowned. “Everything okay?”

“It will be,” James nodded, still smiling. “You’re not leaving.”

Maze’s left eyebrow shot up in question. “And why have I had this sudden change of heart?”

“Because I don’t want you to leave,” he said simply and pushed away from the door frame.

“Oh?” the right eyebrow joined the left.

“Mhm,” James mused as he slowly moved towards the couch. “You’re not going anywhere for … oh I don’t know … how does the foreseeable future sound?”

“Foreseeable future you say?” Maze said thoughtful, moving his arm to rest on the back of the sofa in what James assumed was an invitation. “I don’t know, I might have plans.”

“Cancel them,” James said firmly, placing one knee on the sofa and leaning over him.

“Cancelled,” Maze grinned and tilted his head back to look up him. James had never been taller than him before, it was an interesting new perspective.

James placed a hand on the sofa next to Maze’s head and stopped, unsure of where to go from there. He hadn’t really thought the whole plan through, all he knew was he wanted to show Maze what he’d discovered but he had no idea how to go about that. So stupid.

“I’m not very good at the whole being aggressive thing,” he admitted, feeling the heat rising in his neck and cheeks.

“Well it’s a good thing I’m aggressive enough for the both of us then, isn’t it?” Maze grinned wickedly, fangs glinting, as he reached up and grabbed the back of James’ neck.

James’ resisted. He still wanted to make Maze understand what he’d discovered and why he’d suddenly changed his mind. “I’m not gay,” he murmured.

“Oh shut up,” Maze growled and pulled him down with an impressive amount of force.

To say that Maze was a good kisser was an understatement, the man kissed like his life depended on it. It left James so breathless that he had to pull back after a few minutes.

“I hope you don’t think you’re going to run away again,” Maze growled, tightening his grip on James’ neck.

“I’m not going anywhere,” James laughed. “Just needed a little air.”

“Breathless already?” Maze raised an eyebrow as he opened his eyes to stare up James. “Humans and your limited lung capacity. How are you going to handle it when the clothes start to come off?”

James bit his lip, hesitating. He knew he definitely wanted to kiss Maze more, but clothes coming off? He wasn’t quite ready for that, not yet. A flash of movement at the corner of his vision caught his attention. He glanced up, expecting to see one of the neighbourhood cats or dogs, and froze.

“Um Maze,” he said hesitantly.

“Oh relax,” Maze laughed. “We’re not talking clothes removal so soon, not when you’re still a flight risk.”

“No Maze,” James said firmly. “Who the hell is that?”
